The Fall season has arrived. Leaves are changing colors and falling to
the ground, students are back in school, and people are making a shift in
their schedules and work-out routines.
When making those changes to your routine, be sure to allow yourself
time so you can still enjoy those extra- curricular fitness activities
that you participated in over the Summer. Just because the season and our
schedules have changed, does not mean we have to put our fitness routine
in a box. Take time to enjoy the outdoor activities you love.

Going for a hike with friends and family is a lot of fun, good
exercise, as well as a fine way to spend time together. Spending time
alone together is essential in any relationship, including your
relationship with God. We need to spend time alone with our Maker just as
we do with our spouse, our kids, and our best buds. Just because He
resides in your heart and goes with you everywhere you go is not enough.
Spend time alone with Him. Whether it be in your prayer closet, your
bathtub, or your prayer mountain. The next time you feel the urge to be
alone with your Lord (hopefully that is often!) ... Take A Hike!
No, I'm not telling you to go way, but to go away with Him. Spend the
day with Jesus. Take a real hike as a form of not only physical but
spiritual fitness as well. Get to the top of your prayer mountain! Even if
you don't make it to the top of Mt. McKinley or Mt. Everest, make it to
the top of the mountain where the Holy Spirit will meet you.
Hike your way to a physically and spiritually fitter, stronger you and
don't forget to pack the essentials- food, water, and your bible! Allow
for plenty of time- you don't want to get to the top of the physical
mountain, look at your watch and say, "Gee! It's so late I better
head back." Leave your watch at home if you must, or go part way up
that physical mountain if you need to in order to get to the top of your
spiritual mountain-your prayer mountain.
Hiking4Him is a great way to spend time alone with your Lord and work
those muscles while you are at it. Hiking works your glutes, hamstrings,
quads, calves, and believe it or not, your abs. It also increases balance
and helps to strengthen your core. Take Jesus on your next hike so you can
work not only your muscles but your spirit too. Spend time alone with the
Holy Spirit, your prayer partner, your intercessor, your comforter, your
friend and ... Take a hike.

Fitness Tips

Hiking Footwear When planning a hike be sure to care for your
feet and your ankles. Last month we discussed preventing injury by
wearing the right shoes, this goes not only for runners, but hikers
as well. You need a pair of good solid hiking shoes that have a wide
base (like cross-trainer's as opposed to walking shoes), they need
to be well cushioned and comfortable to help prevent blisters and
other discomforts, water proof or water repellent, and they need to
be able to fully support your ankles. So many people go for a hike
in their day-to-day shoes and unfortunately end up with twisted
ankles, blisters, and even wet feet. Treat your feet right so they
can take you wherever you need to go.
Dress In Layers I can't emphasize this one enough. Layers
are important when going out in the weather, away from shelter, for
an extended period of time. It's not only a safety precaution in
case you get stuck in the rain, but it helps your body regulate
temperature. Take off a layer when you are getting hot and put one
on when you get chilly. I went for a hike last month and
accidentally left one of my warmer layers in my room. When I got to
the top-which was literally in the rain clouds-I was wishing I
hadn't forgotten it, and so was my body. I got a cold and a lesson
that day, the cold lasted me a week and prevented me from my next
planned hiking adventure. The lesson, I hope to never forget.
Bring Water and Healthy Snacks In the article, "Why
Water," it explained the importance of drinking plenty of water
when out in the sun. Well this same rule applies even if you are out
on a crisp Fall day, hiking up the mountain and sweating! Sweating
is your body's way of cooling down and thirst is a signal your body
sends to your brain informing it that without fluids-de- hydration
is inevitable. So drink your water and make sure you have plenty for
the trip down the mountain as well.
Along with your water, an 'energy' snack is important as well.
Something light, that will give your body the needed boost-your
burning fuel (calories) on that hike, make sure bring some extra.
Candy bars are out-sorry-it will zap the energy from you almost as
quick as you get it. Bring something without refined sugars, with
carbs and some proteins-like a trail mix (recipe below), fruit-fresh
or dried fruit (natural), or even some beef, salmon, or turkey
jerky. Pack water, pack food, pack your Bible, pack light, pack
smart.
Be a Responsible Hiker Carry out more than you bring in
(as in trash)-Preserve nature. Be mindful of flowers and vegetation
as well as the wildlife around you. And if you are trail hiking,
stay on the trail. This will help preserve nature and keep you from
getting lost. Also, be smart. Let someone know where you are going
and when you expect to be back, you never know what may happen,
expect the unexpected and play it smart and safe.

Here in our monthly newsletter you will find a review of a book on
fitness, health, nutrition, Christianity or something along those
lines. Please feel free to submit your own book reviews to the

With this issue we have wrote up a review of Prescription
for Nutritional Healing, by James F. Balch, M.D. and Phyllis
A. Balch, C.N.C. Published by Avery Publishing Group, this book is
divided into three categories with a total of 570 pages plus a
glossary and a full index.
"A Practical A-Z Reference to Drug-Free Remedies Using
Vitamins, Minerals, Herbs & Food Supplements." This
subtitle of the book says it all. Like the book itself claims it is,
"A comprehensive & up-to-date self-help approach to good
health." The book's three categories are: Understanding the
Elements of Health; The Disorders and; Remedies and Therapies. It's
easy to look up items since it is laid out like a dictionary. A very
handy reference to have.
Prescription for Nutritional Healing is also a good
educational tool when you need (or want) to learn more about a
disorder you may have, disorders in general, a vitamin you may need,
nutrition, diet, nutrients and so much more. If you have ever
wondered what Amino Acids are or what the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel
Syndrome are, then this is the book for you. Packed with information
on numerous disorders, a troubleshooting guide for disorders,
resource information on health organizations and even hot lines.
"Packed with great things to inform and educate you, this is
the book to have!"
A scripture to help you focus on Christian life. Meditate and pray
on this verse in the Bible and see how it applies to you and your
life or how you should apply it. Ask the Lord for revelation and
understanding on the scriptures and he will grant your request.
Luke 6:12 AMP-"Now in those days it occurred that He went up
into a mountain to pray, and spent the whole night in prayer to
God."
Jesus went up into a MOUNTAIN to pray, and spent the whole night
in prayer to God. Jesus knew the importance of spending time alone
with his Lord, his Father. And he also obviously knew the value of
having a prayer mountain. A place to go where it is you and God
alone. A place to go where there are no distractions, only the
beauty of God's creations. A place to go to talk to God, to listen
to God.
Hiking up a mountain may have been the only way for Jesus to
escape the throng, even his disciples, his family. He needed to put
God first and leave them behind to do it. When is the last time you
left everyone and everything behind in order to put Christ first in
your life? Leave your family at home. Leave your cell phone alone.
Hike the mountain. Lock the closet door. Leave the world behind and
follow Him. Give your Spirit the quiet time it needs to interact
from, learn from, and get instruction from the Spirit world, your
Spiritual father. Worship Him in the Spirit. Pray in the Spirit.
Walk in the Spirit. 'Hike' in the Spirit. Go to your mountain today.
